English Major Academic Characteristics

In the first year, we build up the "foundation" of English. Vocabulary, English grammar, reading comprehension, writing, and conversational expression are all solidified to build a foundation for acquiring a high level of English proficiency.

Interpretation and Translation

Students will be trained as interpreters and translators, acquiring advanced command of English and Japanese. In the interpretation classes, students will increase their vocabulary and knowledge of current events through extensive listening, and in the translation classes, students will aim to translate according to the type of text.
Medical English Major

Students will acquire a high level of English proficiency and knowledge of medicine and medical care in order to become medical interpreters or medical clerks. The knowledge and skills required for medical interpreting can be used not only in the medical field, but also in a wide range of fields such as the hospitality industry.
English Career Major

In order to find a job that makes use of English language skills, students will be prepared for job-hunting activities, cultivate basic skills for working adults, and learn business English.
University Transfer Major

We aim to transfer students to Kanda University of International Studies and other public and private universities. We will prepare students for university transfer examinations, including English examinations, essays, and interviews.

Proficiency classes

In addition to common courses, English majors study specialized courses in leveled classes. Classes are reorganized in the third semester of the first year and the first semester of the second year.

The goal of the English major is not only to be able to speak English, but also to acquire the English language skills to accurately convey one's thoughts and opinions. This is a skill that will surely be useful no matter what path you take in the future. To achieve this, it is important to have a "basic command of English. By building up the English that you have been learning "casually" into a "solid" foundation, you will be able to further apply it. The unique feature of the English major is that students' dreams and personalities are so diverse. Through a curriculum and class environment that expands each student's potential, students will be able to master English and pursue their own career paths.

My dream now is to become a subtitle translator.

He wanted to play soccer and went to a strong school, but suffered a serious injury in his sophomore year and dropped out of high school. From then on, he spent his days at home immersed in movies. Naturally, he began to yearn to become an English-Japanese subtitle translator and decided, "I can't go on like this. The most important skill I acquired during my two years at Kanda Institute of Languages was speaking ability. The shortcut to improving one's English is to use it more and more without fear of making mistakes. In class, there were many situations in which I had to make presentations in English, and I learned the importance of "sending out messages from myself. I feel that I have become more proactive and my ability to communicate my intentions in Japanese has also improved. Unlike the general entrance examination, there was overwhelmingly little information available for the transfer examination, and I had a hard time selecting the school to take and preparing the documents to submit. Without the support of the school, I don't think I would have made it through. The school provided me with a clear schedule and goals for passing the exam, so I was able to study systematically while maintaining my motivation. I am truly grateful to the teachers at the Transfer Center who also corrected my lengthy statement of purpose. Thanks to them, I was able to pass the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, which was my first choice. I would like to further my studies at the university and become a subtitle translator who can convey cultural differences and historical backgrounds in the future.

Pick Up Lessons

Japan Studies

Students will learn how Japanese culture, such as Japanese food, anime, and fashion, is communicated around the world in English, and develop the ability to communicate about Japan in English.
TOEIC® Speaking & Writing

Students will prepare for the TOEIC® Speaking & Writing Test (required for English majors), which measures the two English skills of speaking and writing.
Debate Exercises

The goal is to acquire the knowledge, information gathering skills, logical and critical thinking skills, and the four English language skills necessary to be able to debate in both Japanese and English.

I spent two years in Kenya as an "Overseas Mission Fellow.
It was a time for self-reflection.

I decided to enroll in Kanda Institute of Languages because I was attracted by the small class size and the ability to acquire "English + α" skills. I wanted to work at an overseas diplomatic mission because I wanted a job where I could make full use of the English I had learned. I was able to fulfill my wish and passed the exam in the fall of my sophomore year, thanks to the extensive guidance I received in the on-campus exam preparation course. At the Embassy of Japan in Kenya, I was in charge of various tasks, such as assisting dignitaries visiting the country from Japan at the airport, booking accommodation, and arranging vehicles. The experience of being involved in providing local support for visiting ministers and parliamentarians from various ministries and agencies is something that will last a lifetime. In my private life, I tried horseback riding with local friends. I will never forget the experience of crossing paths with wild animals in the vast land. After returning to Japan, I decided to pursue a career as a creator after attending a technical college for computer graphics, and now I am in charge of creating 3DCG characters at a production company.
In the future, my goal is to create human-like virtual humans and produce talent activities on SNS. 3DCG has a wide range of expression, but information in Japanese is very limited. The English skills I developed as a student have been very useful in gathering the latest information from overseas. I would not be where I am today without the experience of studying English hard at Kanda Institute of Languages and working abroad as an overseas diplomatic mission representative. I am very happy to be able to spend my days challenging myself to do what I truly want to do.

About English Majors Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the English major and the Global Communication major?: There are three major differences. First, the Department of Global Communication has "TOEIC® 800 or higher" as one of its graduation requirements; students cannot graduate without a TOEIC® score of 800 or higher. On the other hand, the English major has no such graduation requirement. This difference is due to the fact that the objective of the Department of Global Communication is to nurture individuals who can be immediately effective in the international community, and the Department emphasizes the development of English communication skills with a TOEIC® score of 800 or higher, which is necessary to be able to work immediately. The Global Communication Department requires 147 credits (2352 hours) for graduation, while the English Major requires 130 credits (2080 hours). And while the English major is divided into the "Interpreting and Translation / Medical Interpreting / English Career / University Transfer" majors, where students study each specialized skill in more depth, all students in the Global Communication major follow the same curriculum. As you can see, there are many differences between the two departments. We encourage you to attend school information sessions and other open campus events to help you choose the right department. Please note that a "Certificate of Participation in the Global Communication Department Information Session" is required when applying for the Global Communication Department, so please be sure to attend the information session.
