I became interested in languages and multiculturalism when I was in elementary school and had my sights set on the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, but after a long process of taking entrance exams, the results were fruitless. In the midst of my feelings of not being able to give up, my mother found KIFL. I was attracted to KIFL not only because of its support for transferring, but also because of its ability to train English language skills from the basics. I loved English, but in the EIC class after entering the school, I struggled a lot with speaking at first because of all the international students and returnees. As I had only studied mainly reading for my university entrance exams, expressing my own opinions in English was a big obstacle for me. One thing that left a lasting impression on me was the advice I received from my teacher when I was struggling to improve my TOEIC®. He told me, "Just read the printed word, even if it's Japanese," and I devoted an hour of my commute to school to reading, which increased my processing speed in reading English passages, and my score went up dramatically. This was truly an eye-opening experience. At university, I plan to study second language acquisition theory. I would like to deeply explore the process of how people acquire a language other than their native tongue. I learned at KIFL that the key to language improvement is not to be afraid of making mistakes but to be proactive in trying to communicate.
