スミスさんが書類は届いたかと聞いています。

Mai: Mr. White, Mr. Smith from ABC Co. called while you were out. He asked did he receive the document I sent him.
舞: ホワイトさん、外出されている間にABC社のスミスさんからお電話がありました。わたしが送った書類を、彼が受け取ったかと聞かれていました。

Mr. White: YOU sent HIM the document?
ホワイトさん: 君が彼に送った書類を受け取ったか、スミスさんが聞いたの？

Mai: No, no. Mr. Smith sent you the document.
舞: いえ。スミスさんがあなたに送った書類です（もう、なんでいつもこうなるの？）

Mr. White: Oh, you mean he asked you if I received the document he had sent me?
ホワイトさん: あぁ、彼がぼくに送った書流をぼくが受け取ったか、彼が聞いたんだね？

Mai: Didn’t I say that?
舞: わたし、そう言いませんでしたか？

Mr. White: No, Mai. You didn’t.
ホワイトさん: 言ってないよね？

さて間接話法の第二弾、Reported Questionです。
３つのステップに沿って何度も練習すれば、それほど難しくないですよ。
日常会話でもビジネスシーンでも必要になりますから、練習しておきましょう。

Step 1 : 主語＋askedを文頭につける。
Step 2 : 疑問文が、Yes/Noで答えられるか否かを見る。
Yes/Noで答えられるならifを、答えられないなら疑問詞を続ける
Step 3 : 倒置を戻す。

つまり、ifと疑問詞の後ろは必ず「主語＋動詞」という並びにします。
※前回お勉強したように、メインの主語が過去形ならば続く動詞も過去形にします。

例１）Are you Japanese?

Step 1: He asked…
Step 2 : He asked if…
Step 3 : He asked if I was Japanese.

例２）Where do you live?

Step 1: He asked…
Step 2 : He asked where…
Step 3 : He asked where I lived.

それでは以下の疑問文をShe askedで始まるReported Questionに変えてみましょう！

(1) Can you drive me to the station?
(2) How many sisters do you have?
(3) Do you work in Tokyo?
(4) Why are you running?
(5) What do you usually have for breakfast?

(1) She asked (me) if I could drive her to the station.
(2) She asked (me) how many sisters I had.
(3) She asked (me) if I worked in Tokyo.
