What is a Learning Advisor?

Learning Advisors are fully qualified teachers. They do not teach in a classroom environment, but work in the SALC with individual learners. Learning Advisors are trained to support learners to develop their learning skills as well as their language proficiency. This support takes the form of a dialogue with the learner in which the learner's needs, preferences and goals are used to help them construct their own programme of learning. Learning Advisors will help learners develop an awareness of:

  • -time management
  • -learning needs
  • -learning styles
  • -learning strategiesand
  • -learning resources

with the aim of helping them to develop their own personal curriculum.

KUIS students can come and talk to a Learning Advisor at any time. Some of the reasons why you might want to talk to a Learning Advisor include that you want to know:

  • 1.What language learning styles are good for you.
  • 2.How to improve your speaking.
  • 3.How to study for TOEIC, TOEFL or IELTS.
  • 4.How to use the materials in the SALC to help you learn a language
  • 5.How to use some of the facilities or equipment in the SALC.
  • 6.About useful strategies for learning vocabulary.

Learners can come and talk to an advisor alone or with a friend. It's possible to see a learning advisor just once with a specific enquiry (such as how to use SALC facilities) or to meet regularly to discuss long-term learning plans (such as how to improve your listening skills for communicating with native speakers).
