The SALC Modules

What are the Modules?

The SALC Modules are courses of work that last for eight weeks. There are currently eight different modules - two for Freshman students and five for Sophomore students and one non-credit module for Juniors and Seniors. Learners participating in the Modules can get maximum extra 10 points on their Freshman English class grade or the relevant Sophomore class grade.

Who should take the Modules?

The Modules are for students who want to either improve specific areas of their English proficiency, or learn the skills to become a successful independent language learner. The SALC Modules are optional, but provide an excellent opportunity for learners to develop their language learning skills outside the classroom.

Students receive weekly written comments from their learning advisor in addition to attending workshops at three points during the process. The final project is for the learners to create their own learning plan.

FRESHMAN:

The Freshman Modules are the First Steps Module and the Learning How to Learn Module.

The First Steps Module is a learner training course and takes learners on theefirst stepsfof becoming a good independent learner. The Module covers topics such as eLearning Stylesf, eLearning Strategiesf and eTime Managementf. The final project is to write a learning plan in which the learner has complete choice in what they study.

In the Learning How to Learn Module the learner uses (or revises) the learning plan they wrote at the end of the First Steps Module and works through their own curriculum. The emphasis is on the development of language learning awareness, but students tend to notice an improvement in language proficiency too.

SOPHOMORE:

There are five Sophomore Modules: the Writing Module, the Media English Module, the Speaking Module, the Reading Module and the Business English Module.

When taking a Sophomore Module, the learner and learning advisor work closely together and communicate both face-to-face and in writing via a learning diary.

Aims

The purpose of the modules is to promote learner autonomy and develop self-directed learning skills in a supported and enjoyable way. Students draw on previous knowledge, for example, from what they learned in class or in other modules to create and implement an individualized course of independent study.

Through the process of monitoring, experimentation and reflection, by interacting with others, by selecting and using appropriate resources, and by receiving support from learning advisors, the learners develop a deeper level of cognitive and metacognitive awareness.

Outcomes

At the end of the process, learners are likely to see an improvement in language proficiency in their target areas. By the end of the module period, students should be able evaluate the effectiveness of the process and be able to create an implement an effective course of independent study in the future.

JUNIOR & SENIOR:

The Module available for Junior and Senior students is the Preparing for your Future Module. Students who need help with preparing for IELTS, TOEFL or TOEIC can take the Preparing for your Future Module. They will not receive any credits for taking this module, but it will help them to plan their learning and to use SALC materials.
