The SALC Modules

What are the Modules?

The SALC Modules are courses of work that last for eight weeks. There are currently seven different modules - two for Freshman students and four for Sophomore students and one non-credit module for Juniors and Seniors. Learners participating in the Modules can get maximum extra 10 points on their Freshman English class grade or the relevant Sophomore class grade.

Who should take the Modules?

The Modules are for students who want to either improve specific areas of their English proficiency, or learn the skills to become a successful independent language learner. The SALC Modules are optional, but provide an excellent opportunity for learners to develop their language learning skills outside the classroom.

FRESHMAN:

The Freshman Modules are the First Steps Module and the Learning How to Learn Module.

The First Steps Module is a learner training course and takes learners on theefirst stepsfof becoming a good independent learner. The Module covers topics such as eLearning Stylesf, eLearning Strategiesf and eTime Managementf. The final project is to write a learning plan in which the learner has complete choice in what they study.

In the Learning How to Learn Module the learner uses the learning plan they wrote at the end of the First Steps Module and works through their own curriculum. Again the emphasis is on learner training rather than developing language proficiency.

SOPHOMORE:

There are four Sophomore Modules: the Writing Module, the Media English Module, the Speaking Module and the Reading Module.

In these Modules, the learner writes their own learning plan according to the Module they are taking. For example, in the Writing Module, the learner will write a learning plan based on developing English writing skills. They are encouraged to think about their weaknesses in writing and to write a plan to address those weaknesses. The learner then works through their learning plan with the support of a learning advisor.

Throughout these six Modules the learner and learning advisor work closely together and communicate both face-to-face and in writing via a learning diary.

JUNIOR & SENIOR:

The Module available for Junior and Senior students is the Preparing for your Future Module. Students who need help with preparing for IELTS, TOEFL or TOEIC can take the Preparing for your Future Module. They will not receive any credits for taking this module, but it will help them to plan their learning and to use SALC materials.
