神田外語学院 Kanda Institute of Foreign Languages

Long time ago when I was in my mid-twenties, I appeared on Japanese TV for the first time. It was a show in which KIFL competed with another school in singing and dancing. You can see me fully dressed as a pretty Japanese lady. The gentleman next to me is Mr. Yarina, a KIFL teacher, who sang 「津軽海峡冬景色」, a traditional Japanese song. Two entertainers, Somenosuke and Sometaro (海老一染之助・染太郎) taught me how to dance to that song. Do you know them? They used to say 「おめでとうございま〜す」while performing using an umbrella. I am sure they must have had a hard time teaching me because this was the first time for me to attempt to dance something like日本舞踊. But, guess what? Mr. Yarina and I got a prize for the most humorous performance although we didn’t mean it to be humorous! I don’t remember if we lost or won, but I do remember that we had a party with the members of the school we competed with, in a very friendly spirit…The way to go! Since then I have been in many Japanese TV and radio shows, but this one will surely stay in my memory forever. Have a look! Don’t I look happy, young, and…slim?

私が20代半ばのころに、初めて日本のテレビ番組に出演しました。この番組は、神田外語学院と他の学校の学生たちが歌や踊りで競う内容でした。かわいい日本人女性の格好をしているのが私。その隣にいる男性は、以前に神田外語学院で教えていたヤリナ先生で、有名な「津軽海峡冬景色」を歌っているところです。 このとき2人の芸人、海老一染之助さんと染太郎さんが、私にこの歌に合わせた踊りを教えてくれました。皆さんはこの方々をご存知ですか？彼らは「おめでとうございま〜す」と言いながら和傘の上で毬を回す芸で有名です。私はこのときに初めて日本舞踊を踊ったのですが、恐らく教えている彼らはとても苦労したことと思います。でも何が起きたと思います！？笑いを取ろうと思って演じていたわけでもないのに、ヤリナさんと私は一番おもしろいパフォーマーとして賞を受賞したのです！ そのとき、自分たちが優勝したかどうかはよく覚えていませんが、終わった後に踊りを競い合った学校の先生たちと仲良くパーティーを開きました。 その後、私はさまざまなテレビ番組やラジオに出演しましたが、このとき出演した番組は一生忘れられません。見てください！私がうれしそうで、若く、そして…….スリムに見えるでしょ？
